New Regime = default
The new tax regime became default from FY 2023-24. Most deductions (80C, HRA, LTA, home loan interest) don't apply here. You get a flat ₹75,000 standard deduction and lower slab rates.

Why New Regime?

Starting FY 2025-26, income up to ₹12 lakh is fully tax-free via Section 87A rebate. Marginal relief kicks in just above ₹12L to avoid a cliff. This makes New Regime a clear winner for most middle-class salaried folks.

When to use Old Regime instead

If you have total deductions of ₹4L+ (80C + 80D + HRA + home loan interest + NPS), the Old Regime may still be cheaper. Compute both on your tax portal before filing.
